National Education Psychological Services Offices, Wexford

This project consisted of the fit out of offices for the Department of Education and Science for use by psychologists.

The offices are on the third floor shell of a new but otherwise fully occupied building with apartments above and office space below.

Overy + Associates were responsible for the design of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, hot and cold water supply, foul drainage, lighting, fire alarm, access control, security, data cabling infrastructure, and telephone infrastructure. We also used our previous knowledge of office fit out to assist the architect in selecting floor finishes etc.

Due to site constraints, the only viable options for heating were either storage heaters or heat pumps. On this basis a variable refrigerant volume air conditioning/ heat pump system was selected which recovers excess heat from south facing offices and makes the heat available to colder north facing offices, or captures heat from the environment if the building has an overall heat deficit. This results in a very efficient system compared with the alternative of storage heaters. Heat recovery is also used on fresh air delivery systems.

A 150 mm raised floor was installed to give flexibility to electrical distribution.
